Week of October 31st- November 4th

Parents--  If you have any extra Halloween candy you would like to donate, our school's Science Committee could really use it for Math & Science Night we are planning on November 17th.  We would appreciate any donation! 

Marine Science Center Field Trip date change: Friday, January 13th!

Picture retakes will take place on Tuesday, November 1st!

Wednesday is early release!

On Friday, the students who earned the 1st quarter prize for completing 10 Math i-Ready lessons with an 80% or higher will spend the afternoon eating popcorn, watching a movie, and can wear their PJ's!

I have carried the RRJ from last week over to this week to be due on Friday.  The writing prompt will begin on Monday and due Friday.  No social studies ticket this week but we will start a yarn doll project on Friday to go along with our novel study!

We have a busy week this week, it is literacy week and our Boosterthon Fun Run will take place on Thursday!

Thank you to all the families who have made donations so far for the Boosterthon!  We look forward to the race on Thursday.

Literacy Week Events:
Monday: Reading Play: The Book Busters written and directed by our very own Mrs. Ray! (We aren't afraid of no books!)

Wednesday: Grades K-2 will dress as their favorite book character and grades 3-5 will be the audience!

Early Release on Wednesday.

Science Fair: Students should continue to be working on their science fair projects.  At this time students should have their hypothesis figured out as well as the materials they will need to complete their project.

Academics:

ELA:
We will have a vocabulary test on Friday! New words:

Last week's test was a struggle for many students.  I am offering 10 points extra credit to add to that score.  Students need to write each word and definition and two sentences with each word using it correctly.  (8 words per sentence)

We will have an RRJ due on Friday as well as last week's social studies ticket.  We will also have a new Writing Prompt due on Friday.  Class time will be given for this prompt.

Math:  We will begin Module 3 which will begin our discussion on fractions.  We will discuss equivalent fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions this week.

Science:  We will wrap up Chapter 6 in our science books. Students will have a test on Chapter 6 on Friday!  We will complete 3 investigations this week: sound energy, light energy, and a fun investigation dealing with candy corn! :)

More information about the Science Fair projects is coming home on Monday.  Please be sure to review the acknowledgement form and sign off on it.  Students should begin working on their project sooner rather than later to allow time for repeated trials.  Feel free to e-mail Ms. Tiberio if you have any questions regarding the science projects.

NEHS will be collecting canned food items for the UCOM food bank/meals on wheels program through the end of October.  Bring in your cans and earn tickets, positive stickers and a good feeling from helping others!

Academics:

ELA: New vocabulary words for the week! Test on Thursday!

We are back to normal with pre-fix vocabulary words but we will continue to reinforce correct usage of the previous homonyms.  
We will have a social studies ticket this week as well as a new writing prompt.  We will NOT have an RRJ this week but will continue to read Esperanza. 

We will have a Mid Unit Reading test on Esperanza Rising on Thursday.

Math:  We will finish module 2 and review, we will take the test on the computers on Wednesday. A review will go home on Tuesday night, please go over this with your child. We will spend Thursday reviewing the test.  We will then move on to Module 3 where we will begin to discuss FRACTIONS!!!!

Science: We will continue to work through forms of energy in chapter 6.  We will visit the science lab on Tuesday.

STEM Activity: Saving Sam

Students had to find a way to rescue Sam from his capsized boat by successfully getting a life saver around him without using any hands!  It was a lot of fun and students were able to understand the difference between an investigation and an experiment.

Week of October 10th-14th

Welcome back and we hope everyone made it through the hurricane safely.  We are grateful the damage wasn't worse than it was.  We missed you!
                                       
                                                   

Our Boosterthon Pep Rally has been postponed until next Monday the 17th!  Our Fun Run will take place on Thursday, October 27th.  

Wednesday is early release!

Friday will be the end of the 1st nine weeks!  All late assignments must be turned in by Friday to receive credit.

Family Fitness Night

Family Fitness Night has moved. It is now this Friday, October 14 from 5 to 8.  There are still needs for help greeting vendors, helping with parking and some of the activities on the track.  Please see the sign up for details.

Academics:

ELA:  We will make up our last week's homonym vocabulary test on Wednesday.
We will not have an RRJ or Social Studies Ticket this week due to missing three days of class work job time. (some students still owe me these from last week!)
We will work on a non-fiction reader activity this week which will be due on Friday. 
If you have not turned in your Spider Prompt you need to do so as soon as possible.  
       
We will also read Chapters 6 and 7 in Esperanza.
I will announce Bin of Happiness winners on Friday and we will use the same phrase from last week:

Math: We will be dividing with larger numbers which will result in a remainder.  This will be our last week on Module 2, next week we will review and test on Module 2.  This test will take place on the computer.  Be on the lookout for the review sheet to practice extra problems with your child before the test.

Science:We will discuss sound and light energy this week.  The chapter we are covering in our science text is chapter 6!  We will also complete 2 labs this week!

Box Tops

Please turn in all box tops by Friday, October 14th!  We use the money we earn from box tops for all our end of year celebrations!

Week of October 3rd-7th

We will attend the Marine Science Center on Thursday, October 6th!  Students will need to bring a bagged lunch where everything can be thrown away, no tupperware please!  Label bag and drink! Students will also need to bring a milk jug.  Students are allowed to decorate these jugs to win a prize.  Students will be visiting the beach, keep in mind the weather can be very different at the beach so bring layers!  We will not arrive back to school until around 2:30.

We had a great time at the Reptile Party on Wednesday!  We are also so thankful that we had 100% participation for families who joined the PTA!  Thank you for your support of this great organization.

Academics:

Our Social Studies Ticket from last week, along with the RRJ from last week will be due this Friday.  Our writing on Spiders will be due this week as well, complete with color coding and graded rubric with a partner.

Math: Students will take the Mid-Module 2 Assessment on Wednesday.  We will continue to work on multiplication and how this relates to measurement equivalents.  By the end of the week, we will work on two-digit division.  

Science:
Students will take a Progress Monitoring Assessment in Science on Wednesday.  This will cover all the standards we have worked on from the beginning of the year.  Now that we have finished our unit on States of Matter and Changes in Matter, we will move on to Forms of Energy.
