Week of December 17th-21st

See the source imageThere will be a SAC meeting in the Media Center on Tuesday night at 6PM.  There will also be a music ensemble performance, following the meeting.  Feel free to join us!

Spelling bee will take place on Wednesday morning at 9AM. Congrats to all of our participants!

Our Holiday Party will take place on Friday!

The 2nd quarter ends on Friday!  We are half way through 5th grade!  Report cards will be sent home in the New Year!

Academics:
ELA:
We will be working on figurative language this week.  We will also be completing Achieve and I-ready lessons.  On Thursday students will complete an activity with a non-fiction reader.

Math:  We are continuing to divide fractions.  See videos below to help with homework or for further enrichment.

See the source imageScience:  We will finish up weathering and erosion with a couple fun labs this week.  We will move on to the water cycle.  There will be a quiz this week on weathering and erosion.  Tentatively planned for Thursday.

Week of December 10th-14th

Mid-year testing continues this week.  Students will complete Math on Monday and Tuesday, and Science on Thursday and Friday.

Don't forget to send in money for the holiday party.  The cost is $6.

Behavior contracts start this week to earn the holiday party!

Early release on Wednesday.

Academics:
ELA:
We will have no new work jobs this week due to Mid Year Assessments.  We will focus on figurative language in literary works and read a fabulous short story called "All Summer in a Day".  We will also address story structure in our  I-ready reading book. Writing will be returned and students will reflect on their essays and color code them.


Math:  We will begin Module 4.  This topic will move into dividing and multiplying fractions.  Task cards for math are due on Friday.

Science:  We will continue discussing rocks and minerals and talk about weathering and erosion.  Students will do a couple labs to learn about the difference between weathering and erosion.

Week of December 3rd-7th

Information was sent home about our holiday party on Friday, December 21st.  The cost is $6.  Please send that in as soon as possible.

Mid-year testing will take place this month.  This is a good indicator for us to see what your child has learned so far this year.  These tests will be on paper.

Your child will test on the following dates:
December 6th & 7th- Reading
December 10th & 11th- Math
December 13th & 14th- Science

Academics:

Our Writing Prompt will be completed this week!  Social Studies due on Friday.

We will complete a Unit Test on Tuesday.

Math: We will be finishing up Module 3 this week.  Students will take the assessment on Wednesday.  This assessment will cover adding and subtracting fractions.

Science: We will be moving on to Rocks and Minerals.  Students will get to explore with different minerals and learn to determine a mineral based on its properties.

Week of November 19th-30th

This will be an extended post!  It will cover the two days before Thanksgiving and the week after Thanksgiving break.  We are thankful for all of our wonderful students and families! 💛💛💛

See the source imageMid-year testing will begin, the schedule for November is as follows:

Students will be i-Ready Reading testing on Monday (19th) & Tuesday (20th) prior to Thanksgiving.

Students will be Achieve testing on Tuesday, Nov. 27th.

Students will be i-Ready Math testing on Thursday (29th) & Friday (30th) following Thanksgiving break.

We look forward to seeing all the progress the kids have made so far this year!

Early Release on Wednesday, November 28th.

Ms. O will be leaving us on Thursday, November 29th!  We have enjoyed having her teach us the last several weeks.

Academics:

ELA:  As stated above,
Monday and Tuesday will be the I-Ready Mid Year Diagnostic.
We will continue to work with text structure: compare & contrast / cause & effect. When we return from our wonderful Thanksgiving break we will resume our study of vocabulary.
Our first 5 words for this group are:
detect-discover, pedestrian-person traveling by foot, inquisitive-to be curious and ask many questions, absurd-completely unreasonable or untrue, numerous-many 
and the wow word is: pedometer-measures footsteps
We will have a test on these words and the next week's words on 12/7.
New work job: Social Studies Ticket/Life in the 1950's due 12/7.
We will also begin a writing prompt the week of 11/26 to be completed by 12/7.

Math:  Students will complete a Mid-Module Assessment for Module 3 on Tuesday 11/20.  This will cover adding and subtracting fractions--especially when found in word problems.  We will continue to add and subtract fractions when we return from Thanksgiving.

See the source imageScience:  We will continue to discuss our planets.  Students will learn the difference between rotation and revolution.  This is a hard concept for students to understand, so ask your child to share with you the difference to see if they are understanding.

Week of November 12th-16th

See the source imageNo School on Monday!  Enjoy the extra day off and thank a veteran!

Science Fair Projects are due on Tuesday!  No Exceptions!

Early Release on Wednesday.

Friday we will head to the Alligator Farm for our field trip!  Parents please meet us at the Alligator Farm around 9:30-9:45, if you are planning on chaperoning.  Students will need to dress for the weather.  They should wear comfortable walking shoes--no sandals!  Students need to bring a bagged lunch--there will be no lunches for purchase.

Science Night will take place on Friday night!  This event is sponsored by the SAC committee and the PTA.  Science Fair winners will be announced!  Other fun events are planned for the evening...including telescopes set up on the track!!  We hope everyone will plan to attend.  Food trucks will be available for dinner. YUM!

Academics:

ELA: We will not have new vocabulary due to the short weeks this week and next week.  New words will resume the week of November 26.
This week we will continue to work on our previous work jobs: Esperanza RRJ with chat and Black Sunday Social Studies packet.  We will focus on text structure in reading with lessons 12-13 in our reading book. Finally, we will begin our mid year assessments.  We will test on I-ready November 19 and 20.  Our Achieve testing  will be on November 27th. Please plan to be present!

Week of November 5th-9th

Math: We will continue to add and subtract fractions.

Science: We will begin discussing the Solar System.  We will work on the galaxy and discussing the parts that make up the galaxy.  Students will be required to keep a moon journal during the month of November.  It will begin on Monday, Nov. 5th.

Academics:

ELA:
New Daily Vocabulary Program to begin this week!  We will continue to
our Morph study as well.
This week we will have 5 new words.  We will complete various activities with these words daily. Next week we will have 5 more words with a test on 11/8 on all 10 words. Tests will be bi-weekly for these new words. These words will be put into our workbooks and may be taken home to study!
This week's words are:

We will be finishing Esperanza Rising this week!  To wrap up the novel we will do Point of View Writing and (the moment you have all been waiting for...) create yarn dolls!  It's not too late to send in yarn!

Finally, we will be completing our first writing prompt about Bicycle Sharing Programs. The writing looks fabulous so far!

Math:  We will continue working with fractions.  We will be adding and subtracting with unlike denominators.  We will also look at fractions in word problems!

Week of October 22nd-26th

We had a blast at the Fun Run last Thursday!!  Thank you to all families who donated!



Tuesday will be PJ Day for both classes.  Students can dress in school appropriate pajamas.

Academics:

ELA:  We will go back to our Morphs this week with a focus on list #4.  The test will be Friday, 10/26 and it is cumulative!

Emoji Writing is due this week along with our Text Structure activity.  We will continue to read Esperanza and will have a test on Friday covering what we have read so far. Students will be able to use the book as well as any notes we have taken in our Source Books.
We will continue working on our bicycle sharing prompt.

Math:  We will be moving into Module 3 this week.  Which will cover adding and subtracting fractions!!!! We will also review for the upcoming module 2 assessment on Friday, October 26th.  Be sure to review the study guide with your child to help them prepare.  The assessment covers: division, multiplication, evaluating expressions, adding and subtracting decimals, and metric conversions--students will have a conversion chart.

Science: We will be exploring with electric circuits, we will discuss insulators and conductors and begin discussions about Force and Motion.
