Week of November 9th-13th

Congratulations to Julian & Connor for being named our November Eagle of the Month!  These boys were selected for showing such great patriotism both at school and in our community!  Keep up the great work, gentlemen! 

Another busy week at Bartram Springs, there will be no school on Wednesday in observance of Veteran's Day!  We will have a flag raising ceremony at 8:45 on Tuesday!  On Friday,  we will have our Fun Run at 10:00am.  Please continue to get pledges so Bartram is able to purchase another computer cart!  Feel free to join us on the track at 10, to cheer on your kids! 

Academics:

ELA:  We WILL have a vocabulary test on Friday.  
Students will have an RRJ due next Thursday, 11/12/15.
We will be completing our informative writing prompt and moving onto Opinion writing. 
We will continue our study of sports in America!
RAHs are due Thursday as always!
Ask your child about Achieve 3000 and the progress they are making!
I am super proud of the work that these students are doing!  They are working hard to earn Top Quality and taking such pride in their work! :)

Math:  We will continue our work with fractions by solving word problems involving fractions.  Students have really done a great job so far using the rectangular models to help them solve!  We are already halfway through Module 3, so we will have a mid-module assessment on Friday!  The videos will be posted below!

Science: We will begin discussing the 3 states of matter, this topic will be covered in Chapter 5 of the students Interactive Science workbooks.

Elementary Math Parent Homework Helpline

Parents-- Please read below to learn about another way to assist your child with nightly homework!  It begins tonight! :) 

To provide additional support to parents we have developed a new resource, “The Elementary Math Parent Homework Helpline.”   This will begin on Tuesday, November 3^rd and continue on Tuesday and Thursday nights.  Certified teachers will be available to assist families in solving problems and discussing mathematical questions and issues that their children are learning in class.  Parents can call in or join a collaborative online space from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in order to access assistance. Please share the following link: http://dcps.duvalschools.org/Page/17877.  This is where they can access the online link to the whiteboard space should they have access to a computer.  Alternatively, parents can also call in by telephone: (571)-392-7703 PIN: 731 439 616 412.  We hope that this will prove to be a valuable resource for parents and students to support our teachers’ efforts in the classroom.

We started Red Ribbon Week with our faculty Literacy play
Follow the Yellow Book Road which emphasized the 25 book challenge!  We will be calculating our first 9 weeks book log totals and adding stickers to our class chart.  If your child has not been turning in book logs they will not be on track for meeting the goal.  

Remember 125 pages/chapter books = 1 book read.

RAHs are due every Thursday! 

We are starting a new Module this week which is all about sports in America.  We will be reading a text entitled
Jackie Robinson: Promises to Keep.

Math: We will begin Module 3 which deals with fractions!!  Everyone loves fractions! :) We will start by identifying equivalent fractions and finding a common denominator.  We will then begin adding and subtracting fractions.  Videos will be posted below.

Information regarding Math Module Assessments: When students take the FSA in April, they will have many different types of questions.  These questions are reflected on the module assessments the students take.  I have informed the students that multi-select answers are considered "all or nothing" type questions.  When a problem states, "select all the answers..." the students need to get all of the correct answers in order to receive any credit.  I am following this same format on these assessments.  Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Math Noticing: Students are really struggling with their multiplication facts which is causing them to struggle with their division.  It is so important that they understand and have math fluency!
Consider trying: www.mathfactspro.com or buy/make multiplication flashcards!  They also have fluency worksheets you can print at home and try.  

Science: We will continue discussing the moon and the planets.  We will have a test on Friday covering both of these topics.  Look for a review to come home on Thursday.  Moon journals are being checked every Wednesday!  Please continue to record.

Readers Theatre: The First Annual Planet Awards!

Mrs. Ray's homeroom spent time rehearsing and performing a readers theatre skit about the 8 planets.  They were all great performers and audience members!  Please enjoy the pictures!

Week of October 26th-30th

Red Ribbon Week started on Friday, October 23rd--here is the schedule of activities taking place at BSE:

Monday- "Put a Cap on Drugs"-- Wear your favorite hat
Tuesday- "Turn Your Back on Drugs"--Wear your shirt backwards
Wednesday- "Sock it to Drugs"-- Wear your favorite crazy socks --
Thursday- "Red-dy-Set-Go, Just say NO"= Wear red to celebrate Red Ribbon Week and our pledge to be Drug Free!

Wednesday would also be a good time to bring in some socks to donate to the Sulzbacher Center!  Our gifted classes are collecting socks until the end of October!!  

Monday, October 26th is the official end of the 1st quarter!  Report cards will be sent home on Thursday, November 5th.

Also, there is no school on Friday, October 30th!

RRJ will be due NEXT Thursday! November 5.
Final Assessment for Esperanza Rising will be on Tuesday.  It will be putting the final touches on an essay that we have been working on for two weeks.  This will be the final paragraph! We really enjoyed this novel and were sorry to see it end! :)

October/November Book of the Month!  Such a fun book!  We will be responding to this piece of literature in a paragraph describing the visual elements of the book!

Math: We will wrap up Module 2 by spending Monday & Tuesday working on long division when the product has a remainder.  Wednesday we will review all of Module 2, students will bring a review sheet home to study for the Module 2 assessment on Thursday!

Science:  Students brought home a Moon Journal to work on each day.  This will be due back Friday, November 20th.  However, it needs to come back and forth to school because I will check it for a weekly homework grade.  We will continue to discuss outer space, we will work on the laptops completing a Gizmo, Gizmo's can be accessed at home as well.  The Gizmo we are working on is titled "Solar System".

Cloud Finders

On Thursday, we used our cloud finders to identify the different types of clouds that were in our sky that day!  We saw 3 different types of clouds: cumulus, cirrus, stratus
